Level 1: Sign

9-C-07-DT

This sign plan includes two options for a set of signs for Regions Bank on the Holston Building. The two sign packages include a highway oriented sign on the North and South facing facades on the penthouse of the building and a wall sign on the entablature (the superstructure of moldings and bands which lies horizontally above the columns, resting on their capitals). The two plans vary with the first showing a projecting sign with time and temperature unit and the second showing an internally illuminated projecting sign.

Staff Comments
This building is within the Gay Street National Register Historic District. See page 26, C7a. & C7c. These guidelines provide for signs above storefront windows and below second story windows on a sign board or as a hanging sign of 6 sq. ft, and specify that signs may NOT be internally lit. The proposal calls for a wall sign on a building that does not have a sign board. The second proposal calls for an internally lit hanging sign of 45 sq. ft.

The proposed sign on the penthouse should be considered for approval because the penthouse is a non-historic addition and the sign is not too intrusive. At the ground or sidewalk level window signs, a sign plaque, or a hanging sign are alternatives that should be considered for this historic building.
