Staff Comments
This building is located in the Southern Terminal & Warehouse (National Register) Historic District, so the Historic Resources section of the guidelines apply (Section 1.C). The Historic Resources guidelines recommend that signs not be internally illuminated. The board has approved internal illumination in the past but has consistently only approved it when light is able to penetrate only a portion of the sign face, such as the letters and decorative elements. Staff has some concern with the sign having sharp metal corners and only being 5'-0" above the walkway. The applicant has proposed installing a clear protective devices on the lower corners to protect from injuring someone that brushes up against it.

The guidelines recommend wall signs be attached on the sign board above storefronts and below the second story window sills. This is not possible because of the building design. Staff believes the proposed sign is appropriate for this location because of its size and being along a private walkway.
